Belmar’s Preferred Tree-planting list for homeowners 

Suggested Street Trees

 (for planting between sidewalk and curb or “planting strip”)

Trees must be: 2” – 2½” in diameter (caliper)

 

Nursery grown, Quality A grade, and free of disease and insects. Balled and burlapped (B&B) using natural fiber rope and burlap.
Newly planted trees must be watered deeply for the first 2 years.“Gator bags” may be used during the summer months for irrigation.
Trees noted with an asterisk (*) are NOT considered salt tolerant.

Native Trees – Not for planting in the planting strip

Swamp white oak, grows large up to 100 ft and females produce acorns, plant only on private property and wide areas

White oak, grows large up to 100 ft and females produce acorns, plant only on private and wise areas

Red maple: plant only on private property and wide areas, beautiful fall color.   Needs a wide area (4 feet or more) since it needs area to accommodate the roots.

Black gum grows large up to 150-60 ft, plant only on private property and wide areas

River birch: Good for parks, open areas, or landscapes, do not plant in planting strip , since it typically has multiple trunks due to its branching habit, and is shallow rooted.

American holly:  Good for parks or open areas but not good for the planting strip since it is a broad growing tree. It will encroach on the sidewalk and roadway hampering traffic.  Females produce red berries, and spikey leaves messy on sidewalks.
