15 new trees were planted, in planting strips, private yards, one at the library sponsored by the Belmar Woman’s Club and 3 in the Plaza and Main Street, sponsored by Belmar Shade Tree Commission. Trees help us all!

We are announcing a new 2024 Belmar Residents Only tree buying program as our goal with the help of residents is to make Belmar even more beautiful. Join us in our efforts to plant trees in Belmar. We are offering this program through Fernbrook Farms Wholesale Nursery of Bordentown, NJ.

The Belmar Shade Tree Commission wishes to remind Belmar homeowners that a permit is required for: tree removal, stump removal,tree planting and/or pruning of trees within the planting strip which is the area between the curb and sidewalk. Permits are available at municipal building or downloadable by clicking this link.

The Belmar Shade Tree Commission wishes to notify Belmar residents that in the near future we will be conducting a hazardous tree stump survey. The survey is intended to identify tree stumps located within the planting strip that pose a hazard to the public. Tree stumps identified as hazardous as a result of the survey should be removed by the responsible property owner. Earth Day 2024
Shade Tree volunteers participated in Pyanoe Plaza Earth Day beautification. Down to Earth Landscaping in partnership with the Belmar Shade Tree Commission planted new trees, shrubs, and flowers to beautify and revitalize the Pyanoe Plaza

Arbor Day 2024
Members of the Belmar Shade Tree Commission, assisted by Mayor Gerald Buccafusco and Councilwoman Maria Rondinaro celebrated Arbor Day with 4th Graders from both Saint Rose Elementary School and Belmar Elementary School. The 4th grade students learned about trees participating in an Arbor Day presentation, each student then received an official Junior Arborist Certificate, and with help from the Shade Tree Members planted white dogwood seedlings in both the Belmar Library Nursery and Belmar Elementary School Nursery.

Pruning Basics Seminar: Sponsored by the Belmar Shade Tree Commission

Description: Are you planning to prune the plants in your yard? Learn why pruning is needed, when pruning is appropriate, and how to do it without spreading disease or making things worse. There will be lots of helpful hints along the way.

Speaker: Bob Magovern, Certified Master Gardener, with 20 years of experience as a certified Master Gardener. He is certified in Professional Landscaping and Pest and Disease Management. Bob has worked as a horticulturist for a large retail nursery, giving workshops and managing plant health. He was previously a Program Assistant to the Monmouth County Agricultural Agent working on issues surrounding watersheds, rain gardens, and soil testing. Bob loves sharing his knowledge with the public.

Belmar’s 2022 Preferred Tree -planting list for homeowners

2022 Suggested Street Trees
(for planting between sidewalk and curb or “planting strip”)
Trees must be: 2” – 2½” in diameter (caliper)

High branched

  • Nursery grown, Quality A grade, and free of disease and insects
  • Balled and burlapped (B&B) using natural fiber rope and burlap
  • Newly planted trees must be watered deeply for the first 2 years
  • “Gator bags” may be used during the summer months
